Denton Animal Shelter Moving Day

8:30 AM

Last Day at the Old Denton Animal Shelter

A longtime volunteer poses with two of her favorite pups on their last day in the old Denton Animal Shelter on Friday, January 30, 2015.
The older facility was covered in hand painted murals and chipped metal kennels that each housed several dogs.
A dog peers under her kennel on her final day at the old Denton Animal Shelter.
A tabby cat gazes out as he lays in between cat cages instead of actually in his cage. At the old facility, there was only one room for all of the cats in the shelter.

A dog peers through the dog-run fence that has been mended with a wet floor sign and old kennel doors.

Moving Day

Beginning at 10:30 a.m., staff members started rounding up dogs for the first transport to the new shelter on North Elm Street.
Staff members start right in to work at the new facility by mapping out locations for each animal while other staff members give a puppy his first round of shots.
Addie (left) and Mikey have been with the shelter for more than a month now after being caught in a court case that ended with the city gaining custody of the two. They are now ready and hoping to be adopted together!
The new facility includes a much larger space for washing towels used and for storage where as the first place had two separate small rooms.
The new center will open it's doors to the public on Monday, February 1, 2015.
Before, to see any animal at the shelter, you had to walk into the entire room whereas in the new facility there are glass backs to the kennels. This allows potential adopting parents to see all of the dogs available and then, through the safety of a staff member, be brought into one of their many "get to know you rooms" to meet the dog.
Each kennel was matched with hand-drawn portraits of each animal.
Addie looks through the glass wall in her kennel as she settles in to her new temporary home.
The Linda McNatt center also includes a "cat porch," which is a room filled with windows and perches perfect for any cat's sunbathe.
