Protesters gather at Denton County Jail over video visitation
8:00 AM
Jennifer Long poses with a sign that reads, "Restore in-person visits all the time!" in front of the Denton County Jail where protesters gathered Thursday evening to protest the jail's video visitation system.
Protesters gathered in the cold to voice their concerns over the system, which doesn't allow any physical contact or even the feeling of being in the same building as the other person.
Larry Peacock, a representative from the Texas Inmate Families Association, spoke during the protest to highlight that the system not only hurts the inmates, but the families of the inmates as well.

Recently, the Sheriff announced that in-person visits could occur if the visitor could be deemed "significant." Ellen McCollum also spoke to the crowd while she held her sign that read, "Hey, Sheriff, all visits are 'significant.'"
All ages were represented at the protest, including 8-year-old Kirsten Smith who was there with her grandmother.

These are brave people, and I salute them. Justice doesn't end with a supposed perpetrator being put behind bars. It continues with the jail conditions and the terms under which such jails exist. Be vigilant about these at every step.
